The California Nurses Association supports National Health Care through the National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC).

The first time I noticed it was when Michael Moore's "Sicko" was released. My wife, a nurse, received a letter from the California Nursing Association that promoted the movie. In the letter they asked that we encourage people to see the movie.

This struck me as odd because I thought that nurses may be a more conservative bunch. Since then I've found that to put nurses and doctors into the same political bag is a mistake. Nurses have a general affinity with doctors but they may not agree with doctor techniues and philosophies.

For instance, I know quite a few labor and delivery nurses who are appalled by doctor interventions during the birth process. They seldom speak up to oppose the doctors since they fear they may lose their jobs. Doctor arrogance is a very real and dangerous entity for those who work in hospitals and those who seek medical care. Every watched the TV show "House"?

Healing Touch Nursing

I did not know about healing touch nurses until last summer when I met one at a party. She was delightful. She told me about how she has been in that career for 10 years and how her practice continues to grow each year.

As healing touch nurses get more good publicity their profession will continue to expand though the demand for their services will appeal to a limited crowd, at least for now.

Medical-Nursing career

Five years ago I found myself in the care of a medical-surgical nurse. I was recovering from major abdominal surgery. I have a very rare disease known as retroperitoneal fibrosis. It's not known as a fatal disease but it may not be possible to get rid of it. Often it strangles the uretra of the kidneys. Not fun.

I was in a teaching hospital in Chicago. My very experienced doctor prescribed a medicine for the pain. I saw the nurse roll her eyes. After the doctor left the room she talked with another doctor who changed the prescription. Thank God for great nurses!

Med -surg nursing has always been considered the starting point for fresh grads to get their feet wet before they move on to a specialty such as labor and delivery, emergency room, psychiatric nursing or surgery. But as of late, med -surg has been considered a specialty of their own. You can now obtain a certification in med- surg and have the title of certified med- surg nurse.
